2006 National (Veggie) Hot Dog Day a Huge Success!

COK’s veggie dog feed-in in downtown D.C.

On July, 19, 2006, more than 30 events—from veggie dog feed-ins* on sidewalks and in offices to leafleting on busy street corners near hot dog vendors to compassionate cookouts—were hosted in 20 states plus Canada, reaching out to perhaps tens of thousands of people about the horrors of factory farming as well as the joys of vegetarian eating.

Hundreds of free veggie dogs were handed out in several cities, thanks in part to Hains Celestial, which generously donated coupons for their Yves brand veggie dogs.

Red Bamboo in Brooklyn, New York, also joined in the celebration by offering diners a National (Veggie) Hot Dog Day menu special—two veggie dogs and fries for $4.95—as well as COK’s literature.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped speak out for pigs! Our first annual National (Veggie) Hot Dog Day wouldn’t have been a success without you! A COK volunteer in Georgia even made a special e-card for the day’s celebration.

Below are more photos of the day’s events, plus great feedback from some of the organizers. If you took part in an event and haven’t sent us an update or photos, we encourage you to do so we can add the details here.

“Our National Veggie Hot Dog Day BBQ turned out really great! We had 19 of our friends come over and they enjoyed veggie dogs—some were surprised how good they were. I gave a little talk about pigs and factory farming and made the point that there are now more tasty vegetarian options available. Many of them picked up the COK pamphlets and veggie starter guides. Thanks so much for organizing this national celebration!”

“The hot dog event went super well! San Diego didn’t go vegan overnight (as anticipated), but we did plant the seeds!”

– Danae in San Diego, Calif.

“Here’s a picture and an excerpt from a newspaper article about our veggie dog gathering. Thanks for all of your help! We’re looking forward to planning an even bigger event next year!”

– Will with Farmed Animal Welfare Network in Iowa City, Iowa
In response to July’s designation as National Hot Dog Month by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, FAWN held a veggie-dog giveaway at City Park to promote meatless alternatives. Approximately a dozen people were in attendance at the event shortly after it started, filling up their plates with relish-slathered dogs, while chatting about vegetarian cooking and animal-rights issues.

“On the 19th, we did a ‘veggie hot dog ambush’ at the park next to Baltimore’s Washington Monument. Over the weekend was Baltimore’s Artscape Festival, so on Saturday some BARCtivists handed out veggie dogs and literature there. We were swarmed! Our veggie dogs were all gone in less than five minutes, and people eagerly took literature and coupons.”

- Erin from the Baltimore Animal Rights Coalition in Baltimore, Md.

“Everything went really well at our Veggie Hot Dog Day leafleting. We were near a hot dog vendor on a street corner, and we (there were three of us) passed out all the flyers we brought with us.”

– Ernest from Action for Animals in Austin, Tex.

“Our event went very well. After work, we stood on a busy street corner in Adam’s Morgan and handed out 50 veggie hot dogs and tons of literature!”

– Ian and Jenn in Washington, D.C.
