Kudos to Takoma Park council for stand on foie gras, #1

Gazette
July 9, 2008

I’d like to express my appreciation to the Takoma Park City Council for adopting a resolution that condemns the production of foie gras.

Foie gras, which is French for "fatty liver," is also-called gourmet pate that’s made from the abnormally enlarged and diseased livers of force-fed ducks. Shoving a tube down an animals’ throat and pumping large quantities of food into their stomachs is too cruel for any civilized society to swallow. Indeed, welfare concerns have already prompted the state of California and more than a dozen countries worldwide to ban this cruel practice.

Bravo to the Takoma Park City Council for being the first city in Maryland to take such progressive and compassionate step by opposing foie gras production.

Noelle Callahan, Takoma Park
