Meatless Is the Way

Editor: Regarding “Going meatless in Merced,” (August 23), vegetarian eating is on the rise not only in Merced, but in cities and towns nationwide—and with good reason. In addition to reducing our risk of heart disease and cancer, a vegetarian diet also reduces animal suffering.

With virtually no laws to protect them, animals raised for food are routinely subjected to cruel practices that include intensive confinement inside cages, crates, or stalls as well as mutilations without pain relief. If dogs or cats were treated similarly, it would result in legal prosecution.

Thankfully, for those of us opposed to animal abuse, we can express our compassion by choosing vegetarian foods. For free meatless recipes, visit www.tryveg.com.
