Stop Inhumane Treatment

Thank you for printing Erik Marcus' Jan. 26 guest column, "The U must stop supporting cruelty," about how easy it would be for University students to rid the campus of one form of senseless animal abuse.

In addition to confining hens to small cages, modern agribusiness — with its concern for profits over compassion — subjects the birds to inhumane procedures like forced molting through starvation and painful debeaking that prevents chickens from eating normally.

The good news is that every University student has the power to make a difference in the lives of these birds. By encouraging the University Dining Services to switch to humane-certified, cage-free eggs, you'll be making a profound impact in the lives of millions of confined and abused animals.
