The Abolitionist: Issue 16

Dear Friend,

Despite the fact that more than 90 percent of all animals killed in the United States are birds raised for eggs and meat, these animals receive virtually no legal protection from horrific abuses while on the farm or in the slaughterhouse. They're severely overcrowded in filthy factory farm warehouses and denied nearly everything natural to them—never once able to roost, dust bathe, forage, raise their young, or fly.

Our undercover investigators worked to expose the reality of the egg and chicken ("broiler") industries by gathering damning video footage from a so-called "Animal Care Certified" egg factory farm and a Perdue Farms slaughter facility. Media coverage of our investigations spread across the country, letting people from the nation's capital to California know what factory farmers want to keep hidden. And, what's more, our complaint against the egg industry with the country's most-respected consumer protection organization came to a wonderful conclusion: The Better Business Bureau agreed with COK that the egg industry's "Animal Care Certified" logo now found on egg cartons from coast to coast is false and misleading advertising.

In just six months, we reached young people in 18 cities with our two new 30-second commercials. I'm thrilled to report that our commercials were seen more than four million times on MTV channels across the country! As a result, traffic exploded to our TryVeg.com online resource site that includes everything you need to transition to an animal-friendly diet.

I've included just a few highlights from the past months—accomplishments we couldn't have done without your support and generosity. It's been a tremendous year for COK, and I look forward to working side by side with each of you in the upcoming year to help those animals seen merely as meat-, egg-, and milk-producing machines. We can speak out for them. We can help end their suffering. Thank you for all you do.

For the animals,
Miyun Park
